AGM & Military Badges

Members and guests gathered at the Police Officers Club for our April 2012 event - the AGM to be followed by a talk and display by Hugh
Phillipson who has been collecting military badges since childhood.

The AGM came first and progressed smoothly, with various options for the year ahead being discussed, amongst other matters.  Then it was onto the military badges.

Hugh has been collecting military badges on and off since the 1940's. He described the background to his collection, the evolution of badges since the mid 1800's, and the fascination and interest they give. He brought his impressive and extensive collection of over 300 badges and 20 related books for
members to see and discuss.

Some members brought in their own badges, some of which there were queries over.  With Hughs personal knowledge and his extensive collection of reference books, several people left the evening enlightened.

In particular David Tolliday-Wright brought along a set of family medals containing from a great uncle who served in the South Wales Borderers during the Boer War campaigns, including two Military Medals, which is unusual.

Several of the guests in attendance decided to join the local branch, which was welcome - and there was much further fruitful discussion afterwards on medals, militaria and history whilst refreshing ourselves in the bar.
